ADHD IN THE SCHOOLS AND PRISIONS

Studies (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4531473/) show that many incarcerated people are suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Since this disorder is detectable early in life if the schools provided mental health evaluations when students are having difficulty with their studies this problem could be addressed early on. To wait until someone has dropped out of school and wound up in prison is a tragic waste of a life especially when the tools exist to prevent this happening. Schools should be encouraged to provide such evaluation altering the nature of the individual’s education appropriately and recommending psychological and psychiatric intervention and medication as required.
