CAN WE PROVIDE SHELTER FOR ALL OF OUR HOMELESS?

CAN WE PROVIDE SHELTER FOR ALL OF OUR HOMELESS?

The Miami Herald reports that in Miami-Dade County, the total homeless population is down to about 3,700, but there is a critical shortage of public bathrooms for those 1,148 living on the street. (https://www.miamiherald.com/opinion/op-ed/article238544703.html).

It is unconscionable that in one of the major cities in the nation and in the world that anyone should be sleeping on the street. Several cities have solved this problem. Miami-Dade County should solve it as well but legal, political and ego matters have worked against resolution. It must be addressed and no one should be sleeping on our streets. Those on the streets are suffering either from mental illness, medical problems, substance abuse or lack of funds. An aggressive effort to define and address this concern as part of the creation of a responsive and adequate Mental Health safety net is required.
