INFORMED CAREER CHOICE

Too frequently career choices are made based on an inaccurate, stereotypical understanding of the true nature and functions of the careers pursued or rejected. This is indeed unfortunate since interest inventories, like the Strong Interest Inventory (https://www.thebalancecareers.com/the-strong-interest-inventory-526173) are available which can tell one, some with .93 accuracy, those careers for which they would most likely complete the course of study and those which they would not. Given the considerable investment of time and money which a college or technical school requires, having the guidance of such an instrument would seem mandatory. Yet, most schools do not require that their students take such a test at anytime in their experience there. Schools should be encouraged to do so and students and parents should insist that the inventories be employed both before beginning studies and between the sophomore and junior years as part of comprehensive evaluation of the past two years of study. This review should include a full understanding of those careers which are shown to be recommended including presentations by representatives of those fields. If the current choice of careers seems to be negatively indicated, the same full understanding of that career should be presented. The mental health impact of pursing a career for which one is not suited can be devastating. And, since there are alternatives, it is irresponsible for those offering education not to require that they be employed.
